Hello! Wazzzzuuupppp! We are certainly in interesting times given this whole Corona business, and I hope you and yours are safe, happy and in good health. Time for another post on Martial Arts Around the World, and for this post we are heading deep into Brooklyn, NY and hanging out with my friend Sifu Zhang and his students at NYC Wushu!

Wushu

Alot of the arts I’ve covered on this platform have been on the mainstream side (BJJ, wrestling, etc) so I was very excited to check out Sifu Zhang’s spot and learn something new. A little background on Wushu — “Wushu” is a Chinese term for “martial arts” or “art of war.” It was created in 1949 in China in an attempt to nationalize the practice of traditional martial arts in China. Competitive Wushu comes in two disciplines: Taolu which involves alot of acrobatic movements and Sanda which is very similar to Kickboxing on first glance, a key difference being chokes and throws are allowed. Today Wushu is practiced all over the world, and there are even international Wushu (Taolu) competitions with some amazing performances! Check out the below performance with Agatha Wong.

I got to Master Wong’s school in Brooklyn on a Saturday, and got to observe some of the kids engaged in Taolu routines. Afterwards, Sifu shared his background with me and walked me through a few moves. Check out the below pics:

I had a good time with Sifu Zhang and his students. If you’re ever in Brooklyn (after this Coronavirus pandemic clears of course) and curious about Chinese martial arts, be sure to check out Sifu Zhang’s school. You can visit his website at nycwushu.com.

Enjoy the below video I put together on my experience at NYC Wushu. And please support my efforts by subscribing to the Martial Arts Around the World YouTube channel! Enjoy!
